COLORADO SPRINGS, U.S. (February 2) – Japanese national team member Masao MATSUSAKA secured a silver medal and collegiate all-stars Taishi NARIKUNI and Yajuro YAMASAKI won bronze medals in freestyle events on the second day of the Schultz Memorial Tournament.

Matsusaka of Nippon Sports Sciences University won three bouts at 86kg before succumbing by technical fall to defending champion Austin TROTMAN (USA) in the final.  Despite the loss, Matsusaka bagged his first medal in international competition.

Narikuni of Aoyama Gakuin University, making his international debut at the senior level, recorded four wins at 61kg but had to settle for a bronze medal after an 8-10 loss to 2015 Pan American cadet silver medalist Kanen STORR (USA).

Yamasaki of Waseda University, meanwhile, lost his opening bout, but strung together four wins in the consolation bracket, earning a bronze medal — his first since winning the gold medal at the 2014 Youth Olympic Games.

Yudai FUJITA (57kg) of AGU and Yushi SAKAMOTO (65kg) of Takushoku University both advanced to the bronze medal finals, but finished in fourth place.
