Susaki, Sakagami Bag Gold on 1st Day of Yarygin Grand Prix

KRASNOYARSK, Russia (January 27) – Cadet world champion Yui SUSAKI won in her international debut at the senior level and 2014 world team member Katsuki SAKAGAMI grabbed her first individual crown outside of Japan at the Ivan Yarygin Grand Prix in the central Siberian city of Krasnoyarsk.
Joining Susaki (48kg) and Sakagami (60kg) on the medals podium, Asian cadet silver medalist Akie HANAI grabbed a bronze medal at 58kg on the first day of competition at the grand prix event.
Meanwhile, 2014 world silver medalist Sosuke TAKATANI (74kg) notched a pair of wins against two losses to finish in sixth place – the best finish of Japan’s five entries in the first day of freestyle wrestling.
Susaki, with three cadet world titles and undefeated in international competition, rolled up four technical falls in her five bouts, including a 10-0 triumph over Daria LEKSINA (RUS) in the 48kg final.
Former European champion Valerie CHEPSARAKOVA (RUS) was the only wrestler to go the distance with the Susaki before falling, 6-0, in the semifinals. Susaki, a 17-year-old Tokyo high school student, won her first senior title at her international debut at the senior level.
Sakagami, a bronze medalist at the 2013 Yarygin meet, also claimed her first international title with four wins at 58kg, defeating European bronze medal winner Yulia PRONTSEVICH (RUS), 5-2, in the final.
