TOKYO (November 19-20) – Former Asian Games silver medalist Takafumi Kojima won the men's freestyle 74kg crown at the Japan Shakaijin Open national championships, signaling his intention to challenge for a spot on the Japanese Olympic team.
Kojima, who won a silver medal at 66kg in the Doha Asian Games in 2006, qualified for the All-Japan national championships in December at 74kg with a chance to win a berth on the Japanese team headed for the Olympic qualification tournaments next spring.
Japanese wrestlers have qualified for five of the 18 weight categories to be contested at the London 2012 Games, including two in men's freestyle from Kenichi Yumoto (60kg) and Tatsuhiro Yonemitsu (66kg).
Meanwhile, in greco-roman, two-time collegiate national champ Fumiya Itakura won the 66kg title and was named the outstanding wrestler of the greco-roman event. Kojima was named the outstanding wrestler in freestyle.
