JAPANESE WIN 5 AT SUNKIST OPEN

MESA, Arizona (October 29-30) – Japanese wrestlers won five gold medals, including three in the women's freestyle events, at the Sunkist Open international wrestling tournament in the United States.

Former world champion Ayako Shoda took the women's 59kg crown, while Kyoko Hamaguchi's heir apparent at 72kg Hiroe Suzuki defeated former world champ Iris Smith (USA) in the semifinals on her way to the title. Ayano Suzuki added a third title at 51kg for the Japanese women.

Seiko Nagashima-Yamamoto, a former four-time world champ, however, came up short at 63kg, falling to 2010 junior world champ Danielle Lappage (CAN) in the final.

In addition to the women's three gold medals, Hayanobu Shimizu (55kg) and Ryo Ito (84kg) also struck gold in greco-roman.

In men's freestyle, Kazuhide Tomita grabbed a bronze medal at 55kg for Japan, but his teammates were unable to wade through the U.S. double-elimination brackets to a medal match.
