TOKYO (August 29-30) – Wrestlers from the Nippon Sports Sciences University returned to the All-Japan collegiate wrestling open championships by winning five of the seven weight categories in greco-roman.
Under new head coach Shingo Matsumoto, the NSSU wrestlers won the first five categories from 55kg to 74kg with two of the collegiate open finals being contested by NSSU teammates.
Tomoaki Nakano defeated NSSU teammate Shota Tanokura, runner-up in all-Japan invitational meet, for the 55kg title while Takahiro Inoue on at 66kg in another all-NSSU showdown.
Waseda's Akira Osaka won at 96kg and Takushoku's Kotaro Kimura at 120kg grabbed the two weight categories not won by NSSU wrestlers. Kimura defeated defending champion Masahiro Tanida (Takushoku) in the semifinals and then stopped invitational winner Shori Maekawa (Waseda) in the finals.
Takahiro Inoue (NSSU) won the 66kg and was named the outstanding wrestler in the greco-roman events.
