SZOMBATHELY, Hungary (August 23-24) – Japan collected a best-ever three bronze medals in boys' freestyle as the cadet wrestling world championships were re-inaugurated after a 12-year break.
Keisuke Otoguro (46kg), Rinya Nakamura (50kg) and Daichi Takatani (54kg) each advanced to the semifinals in their respective weight categories where they all lost. Each wrestler, however, rebounded with wins in their bronze medal matches.
Most notably, Nakamura edged European junior bronze medalist Mirjalal Hasan-Zada (AZE) in the quarterfinals at 50kg. He stumbled, however, against Asian cadet bronze medal winner Hassan Yazdanicharati (IRI) in the semifinals.
Japan's three bronze medals in boys' freestyle was the country's best showing ever in the irregular history of the cadet worlds. Japanese freestyle wrestlers won only single bronze medals in 1980, 1983 and 1987 until the meet was called off in 1999 in favor of continental championships for the younger wrestlers.
The three bronze medals also lifted Japan into eighth place in the final team rankings with 28 points. Russia won the team competition with three champions and 79 points, followed by Iran (69 points, two champions) and India (65 points, 1 champion).
